Health and nutrition - always a difficult and complicated topic. We are learning so many new things
every day about how important a healthy diet is. We have always known it matters but now we know it's not just affecting physical health but mental and all the interactions between the two. Our brain regulates what we burn or store and it needs proper nutrition to do so. Yet what does healthy mean? Growing up it was all about being low-fat. Everything came in reduced or no fat versions! Then we learned fat matters.... stay away from that red meat but perhaps the avocado isn't so bad after all.
I'm neither a physician, dietician, nor nutrition scientist. If you need specific advice please seek it from experts. However, I run a food business and I do know that we, Americans, eat far too few vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and far too much meat, salt, saturated fat, and highly processed food. My recipes will reflect just that. You will find a plethora of fish, vegetables, and whole grains. Even with shortcuts processed foods will be very limited. I'm not counting calories but focusing on whole foods, low sodium, and a balanced diet. These are recipes I would feel comfortable feeding my daughter (when she's moved beyond breast milk!) and hope you do, too.
That being said, I'm also human and sometimes we need a splurge. Those posts will note just that! On Hanukkah I fry up latkes and yes, they are simply bad for you. There are also some desserts on this blog. Most will be huge improvements over traditional dessert but that is different than actually being good for you. Eat them in limited quantities but savor and enjoy when you do.
As mentioned, we keep learning more. If there are particularly good articles or studies I may blog about and post them. And, while I'm no expert, if you ever have questions about my choices simply stick them in the comments and I will answer as best as I can!
